It’s Read Across America Week! From March 2-8, 2025, communities all over the United States are celebrating one of our favorite things at the MACAW Lab: reading books!
Read Across America Week began as a celebration of Dr. Seuss’s birthday on March 2nd. Its goal is to allow others to share a love of books and reading as well as bring awareness to the importance of literacy. It’s no surprise that reading is important for a child’s academic performance, but books are powerful tools for people of all ages. Books can spark your creativity, help build skills, and even be a source of comfort, community, and joy.
The whimsical world of Dr. Seuss has inspired Read Across America Week since its conception. Famously, his stories encourage readers to use their imaginations and think outside of the box. Nowadays, Read Across America Week emphasizes how all kinds of books have the power to introduce readers to new ideas and perspectives. Reading can help children and adults alike open their minds–in a story, you can go places, solve problems, and meet people that you wouldn’t have the chance to otherwise.
This Read Across America Week is a great reason to visit your local library or host a family reading night. There are so many ways to celebrate!
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” – Dr. Seuss
Personally, I’ll be celebrating by finishing a book that a friend lent me called We’ll Prescribe You a Cat by Syou Ishida. It’s a series of short stories about a mysterious clinic in Kyoto, Japan that prescribes cats for people who are struggling with their life circumstances. Reading this book has taught me quite a bit about Japanese culture and made me appreciate cats even more than I already do!
May a whole new world open up for you in the pages of a book during Read Across America Week 2025!
