New milestones from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) has released new communication milestones for speech, language, and hearing for ages birth to five years in addition to feeding and swallowing milestones for ages birth to three years. The communication milestones were informed by research on children learning English in the United States. The feeding and swallowing milestones are based on international data and are applicable across country and language. ASHA also provides tips on supporting children’s development in these areas.

While these milestone checklists are not a diagnostic tool, they help parents understand what to expect at certain ages and where their child is in development. Every child develops differently, so these checklists are designed to outline the typical progression of development. They provide an age range of when the majority of children meet milestones. From them, parents can identify areas where their child may excel or need work. Milestone checklists also help parents know when to seek out professional services and what kind of information is relevant to share with a doctor or clinician.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, ASHA members have reported seeing an increase in children with behavioral, social, and language difficulties compared to before the pandemic. The milestone checklists play a key role in increasing awareness of the signs of developmental delays or disorders. Earlier intervention for these concerns is ideal; however, it is never too late to seek treatment.

If you are concerned about your child’s development, please consult your child’s pediatrician or local early intervention program.
